Although this year the 5th Sport and Innovation Conference to be held in Budapest and Balatonboglár between 14 and 16 September 2022 will not be an international one, the only foreign speaker at the event will be sport scientist Prof Dr Marco Cardinale.
He received his PhD at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences at Semmelweis University, Hungary. His doctoral thesis focussed on the physical training of handball players and the study of vibration. His first scientific article was published in 1997, and since then he has not only published in peer-reviewed journals but also in book chapters. To date, almost 120 scientific articles and publications written by him have appeared in various journals.
Before moving to Qatar, he led the Sports Science activities for the preparation of Team GB (Great Britain and Northern Ireland) at the Beijing 2008, Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 Olympic Games. As a former handball player and coach, he has been involved in coach education in various countries in the area of strength and conditioning and exercise physiology. He completed his habilitation in sport and exercise science in 2017.
Currently he is the Executive Director of Research and Scientific Support in Aspetar, the Qatar Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Hospital and a Honorary Academic and Senior Lecturer at UCL.
"I have done research on different aspects of human performance," he said when asked. “I have spent most of my academic career working in sporting institutions, so my research is driven by the issues I face in my day-to-day work. I have recently 'moved' to a clinical setting, so I am currently focusing more on the clinical aspects of performance such as performance in the heat, therapeutic methods to speed up recovery and return to play. I'm very curious and excited, I can't wait to meet the participants of the conference."
His presentation titled “Research and science in elite sport” can be attended in the Athens Hall of the university on Wednesday 14 September from 11:45 am to 12:15 pm. He will back up his presentation with real-life case studies of his experience of the Beijing, Vancouver and London Olympic Games.
