Report on the TF working breakfast

On October 16, the TF, redesigning its previous series of events, invited interested parties to a “sporty” working breakfast. The informal professional event, which included breakfast, focused on reviewing and discussing the European Union’s sports and physical activity policy, as well as policy issues in physical education.

At the beginning of the program, participants were able to join in the discussions over coffee, tea and breakfast snacks, and then Dr. Péter Farkas, associate professor and lecturer at the Department of Social Sciences, started the event with opening thoughts. The event also presented how the three-year project run by the TF, supported by the European Union, contributes to university developments: to the professional renewal of the courses offered at the TF, their adaptation in English and French, as well as to initiatives such as the thematic corner created in the TF Library, and the integration of EU and sports-themed lectures and research into the program of the Klebelsberg Kuno College for Talent Care.

The highlight of the working breakfast was the presentation of the development of the EU and sports thematic corner created in the TF Library, which is related to the collection expansion implemented within the framework of the Jean Monnet project. The collection, expanded with EU sports policy documents, was handed over to the university community in a ceremonial setting on May 27, and was presented with an opening speech by Dr. Péter Farkas, the professional leader of the project, and Judit Lukácsné Varga, the director of the TF Library and Archives.

Regarding the professional goals, it was stated that the development aims to provide TF teachers, researchers and students with access to modern resource materials in both Hungarian and English for curriculum preparation, extracurricular learning and research tasks. In line with internationalization efforts, the collection was given an English name: Resource Center “The EU Corner”. The several hundred documents are mainly based on materials published since December 1, 2009 (after the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty), when the EU acquired so-called “soft” competence in the field of sport.

The second part of the program was a presentation by Dr. Péter Farkas entitled “Sport and national identity in the light of the Paris Olympics and Paralympics”. The presentation discussed the social and identity-building role of sport, as well as public policy issues related to major international sporting events, with an outlook on the connections between European sport governance and EU policy frameworks. The program concluded with informal discussion and professional networking, during which participants could ask questions, share experiences, and further reflect on the main messages of the presentations. On behalf of the organizers, Project Manager Dr. Péter Farkas thanked the participants for their activity and indicated that the goal is to strengthen professional dialogue and embed EU sport and physical education policy topics in university education, research, and the student community.
