Alexander Vlasenko, the figure skater from the Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS), came very close to securing an Olympic quota at the World Championships in Boston.
Aleksandr Vlasenko, our BA Sport Coaching student, made his debut as a competitor at the World Figure Skating Championships on Thursday afternoon (Hungarian time). Based on world ranking points, he was the first skater to take the ice in the second group.
In his short program, choreographed by internationally acclaimed Ádám Sólya, he delivered the best performance of his career, earning a score of 70.25. The jumps were executed beautifully; the judges awarded high marks for his Triple Axel, and his spins were also rated highly by the technical panel. Aleksandr's performance captivated the audience in Boston's massive TD Garden Arena. According to him, he thoroughly enjoyed skating and did his best to dazzle the spectators.
He came very close to advancing to the free skate, which would have also secured him an Olympic quota spot. Ultimately, he finished in 29th place. Out of the 29 Olympic quotas available for the 2026 Winter Olympics, 24 male skaters earned spots at the World Championships in Boston. Thus, Aleksandr will have another chance to compete for an Olympic spot at the qualification event in Beijing this fall.
