The 45th Chess Olympiad was held at the BOK Sports Hall, Budapest, between 11 and 22 September. Enthusiastic volunteers of the Hungarian University of Sports Science (TF) had a major role in helping the tournament run smoothly.
Some of the volunteers recruited by the Volunteer and Sustainability Office of the Hungarian University of Sports Science (TF) had already joined our team at previous events, but there were also some who joined us for the first time as chess lovers. We had volunteers from England, Denmark, Germany and as far away as Argentina.
Representatives of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) also praised the work of the volunteers, and many international players also praised their helpfulness and professionalism.
During the 25 days of the event, volunteers helped to test the chess boards and prepare the competition area, set up 800 tables, chess boards and clocks, and more than 24,000 chess pieces. Throughout the event, they gave more than 12,000 hours of selfless support in 20 different areas to help run one of the world's biggest events. On the final day, they were also on hand to help with the reorganising of the hall and the removal of the chess kits.
Judit Polgár, multiple Olympic chess champion and voted the best female player in the history of chess, also underlined that it is impossible to organise sporting events without volunteers.
Following the success of the Chess Olympiad, the TF Volunteering and Sustainability Office has already started recruiting volunteers for the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m).
